Testing Specialist Job Description
The Testing Specialist will be responsible for HIV/STI/HEP-C testing and outreach in the established ARE service area. Job duties include but are not limited to:
- Providing HIV/HEP-C/STI testing onsite and at various locations within our service area
- Provide HIV/HEP-C/STI linkage to care and follow-up education as required by established protocols
- Requires regular travel to community sites, partner agencies, or testing locations throughout the organization’s service area
- Identify at risk populations
- Maintain trusted relationships with existing partner organizations and establish new partner organizations/venues
- Conduct community outreach to include HIV/STI 101 education classes
- Support Prevention & Education initiatives and assist with community event planning and execution
- Support and represent ARE at community events as required
- Distribution of prevention and educational materials
- Distribution of sexual health materials, including condoms, to community members as part of outreach and education efforts
- Provide referrals and establish linkages to appropriate health and support services through our status-neutral program, ensuring inclusive and client-centered care for all individuals
- Conduct follow-up with clients referred to community support services, in alignment with status-neutral program guidelines to ensure successful linkage and continuity of care
- Collect and record data on tests administered in accordance with program protocols and reporting requirements
- Assist with data collection and preparation of reports for internal use and external submission
- Complete reports/documentation for prevention and testing services and presentations as established by VDH and CDC guidelines with timely submission
- Energetic and willing to work flexible shifts, including some evenings and weekends
- Expected to follow all ARE policies and procedures
- Observes established safety procedures and OSHA regulations for blood borne pathogens and consistent use of personal protective equipment as needed
- Adaptable and flexible to hand changes in work systems, workload and emergency situations as well as personnel shortages
- Other duties as assigned
As a nonprofit organization, all staff may be required to support or assist with agency-wide initiatives, events or programs outside of their primary job responsibilities. Flexibility, teamwork, and a commitment to the agency’s overall mission are essential and required for this role.
Education
High School Diploma required.
Phlebotomy certification required.
Qualifications
- Must be trained or willing to be trained in phlebotomy (3 month course)
- This position requires a valid and clean driver’s license, and proof of current automobile liability insurance, and skills to operate vehicles in all weather conditions
- Must present with a professional appearance and have a pleasant personality
- At least 1 year experience with interpersonal communication skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong attention to detail, with the ability to accurately complete tasks and identify inconsistencies or errors before submission
- Must have 1 year experience working with diverse populations
- Equipped to work with multicultural and diverse populations
- Experience working with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
- Must be able to work independently as well as in a team environment
- Highly motivated and adaptable self-starter, with ability to manage tasks in a fast-paced environment
- Proficient completion of VA HIV Prevention Series: “The Facts: HIV Basics”, “Fundamentals of HIV Prevention Counseling”, and “The Fundamentals of Waived Rapid HIV Testing” and any relevant trainings pertaining to HIV/HEP-C/STI test technology within 3-6 months of hire

- Able to identify and understand the speech of another person
- Visual acuity to read labels, test tubes, and requisitions accurately
- Able to focus on a single source of auditory (hearing) information in the presence of other distracting sounds and to detect or tell the difference between sounds that vary over broad ranges of pitch and loudness
- Mental activities necessary include a high level of cognitive functioning with communication, listening, and organizational, planning and decision-making capabilities
- May be exposed to bloodborne pathogens, bodily fluids, and hazardous materials; use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is required
- May be exposed to fluctuating temperatures
